The British Oncology Pharmacy Association (BOPA) is an organisation which promotes excellence in the pharmaceutical care of patients with cancer. BOPA is passionate about the role of the pharmacy profession to deliver excellent care to patients with cancer and is delighted that the RSPH has joined us to support our vision. Community pharmacy has a huge potential to act as a resource for patients to access services and could support a range of initiatives, from earlier diagnosis to holistic advice around managing symptoms or the effects of treatment.

Their free RSPH accredited “Let’s Communicate Cancer” e-learning programme provides pharmacy staff with an understanding of the signs and symptoms of cancer, the lifestyle factors that influence the risk of developing cancer, cancer treatments and appropriate referrals for patients with suspected or confirmed malignancy.

Richmond and Wandsworth councils are committed to embedding a MECC (Making Every Contact Count) culture across their organisations to support the health of their residents. As a key part of this initiative, frontline staff need to have the confidence to raise health related issues with people they meet through their roles and to signpost effectively to local services.

The councils have developed a suite of e-learning programmes to provide background knowledge in several subject area and to show how MECC principles can be used to engage individuals, overcome potential barriers to change and signpost to local assessment services and resources. The topics covered include Dementia Awareness, Loneliness and Isolation and Active Travel.

Wessex Making Every Contact Count (MECC) training programme

The Wessex Making Every Contact Count (MECC) training programme has been developed to support the underpinning knowledge for prevention and public health and why Making Every Contact Count is needed (via e-Learning) and then the face-to-face skills development programme, Healthy Conversation Skills, which is accredited by RSPH.

The programme (both e-learning and face-to-face training) supports individuals to build their confidence and competence to be able to deliver a very brief or a brief intervention (mapped to NICE Guidance 49 Behaviour Change: Individual Approaches) with the people they work with.

It has developed cancer prevention workshops which are designed to teach people about cancer prevention through behaviour and lifestyle change.
