In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of staff and members of the public experiencing violence and abuse in healthcare settings. This regulated Level 3 qualification helps staff leading teams in health and social care settings to develop a working knowledge of practices that can prevent and reduce the incidence of violence and abuse.

What is violence prevention and reduction for operational leads?
In 2022, the NHS adopted a public health approach to violence prevention and reduction. This means focusing on the root causes, risk factors and triggers for violence and abuse taking place, rather than addressing the symptoms.
Holders of this qualification will have the appropriate knowledge and skills to understand the causes of violence and abuse, to take action to prevent it from occurring and to respond effectively to any incidents that do occur, and to demonstrate leadership in supporting team members to contribute to violence prevention and reduction.
Who is this qualification for?
The RSPH Level 3 Award in Violence Prevention and Reduction for Operational Leads is designed to support those managing patient-facing teams in the NHS to help prevent and reduce violence and abuse.
Working in an ‘at-risk’ setting in health and social care? There are relatively high levels of violence and abuse in specific health and social care settings, including acute and emergency care. Whatever your role, this qualification will help you to develop the skills and knowledge to help prevent and reduce this. Leading teams in the NHS This qualification is aimed at individuals working in leadership roles in ‘at-risk’ environments in health and care settings. This includes Security Management Specialists, Ward Managers, Senior Sisters/Senior Charge Nurses, and Matrons.
Key skills
This regulated Level 3 qualification will help you to develop the skills and knowledge to support teams to deliver violence prevention and reduction in health and social care settings, including:
- The factors affecting the risk of violence and abuse
- Principles of practice in preventing and reducing violence and abuse
- Principles of practice in responding to incidents of violence and abuse
- How to demonstrate leadership in supporting team members to respond to incidents of violence and abuse
How long does it take to complete?
The qualification takes a total of 60 hours to complete, including 16 hours of guided learning time, assignments and portfolio of evidence.
Career progression
If successful, you can progress on to further qualifications such as the RSPH Level 4 Award in Violence Prevention and Reduction for Strategic Specialists.
