RSPH Level 2 Award In the Safe Use of Rodenticides

What does the safe us of rodenticides involve?

Rodenticides are a key tool in a Pest Technician’s toolkit, helping to manage common pests such as mice and rats. At the same time, it is vital that they are used safely to prevent or reduce harm to non-target species, from birds of prey to cats and dogs.

This accredited qualification is designed to help Pest Technicians, farmers and gamekeepers to understand why the purchase of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides is controlled, and why other rodent control methods should be considered before rodenticides are used.

This qualification is regulated by Ofqual, CCEA and Qualifications Wales.

Who is this qualification for?

The Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Rodenticides is valuable to anyone who uses rodenticides in their day-to-day role, and needs to purchase rodenticides in line with the 2026 CRRU Code.  

Currently working as a pest technician, farmer or gamekeeper, or need to purchase rodenticides as part of your role? This qualification is approved by CRRU and will allow you to purchase rodenticides under the 2026 CRRU Code.

By completing this qualification, you will come away with a practical, actionable understanding of the safe use of rodenticides, including:

• The need to manage commensal rodents, their biology and behaviour
• How to assess a site prior to the implementation of measures to manage commensal rodents
• Methods for the management of commensal rodents

How long does it take to complete?

The qualification takes a total of 13 hours to complete, including 8 hours of guided learning time, followed by a multiple-choice question examination.
