Career development

Starting in the private sector in Health & Fitness I went into the NHS in an Exercise Specialist and Community Development role. I did an MSc in PH while working and then moved into strategy and policy for Manchester City Council. I [now] work for DHSC in the Office Health Improvement & Disparities.

[My advice would be] to get experience of working in communities and with people that need it the most on a topic you are passionate about.

I am currently pursuing my MSc in Public Health. After completing my studies, my intention is to pursue a career in health policy, community health, or epidemiology.

Support from mentors in the field, networking opportunities, and access to internships would be incredibly beneficial in helping me navigate my career journey, which is why I recently applied for student membership in the Royal Society of Public Health.

My degree was in history and I started my career in Education in a local authority, [before I completed an] MSc in Management and Leadership and moved into a Public Health role. I secured a regional public health role in Public Health England working in healthcare public health, and then a national policy role leading Healthy Places.

Wherever you are in the public health workforce there are so many options and roles, different places you can work – locally, regionally, nationally or internationally and in academic settings, NHS roles, in education roles, and many many more.

I began my professional journey in the medical and clinical fields [...] however, I quickly realised the significance of social determinants of health, which sparked my passion for public health. This realisation motivated me to pursue further qualifications, including a Master of Public Health (MPH) and a PhD.

My key advice would be to stay curious and open-minded. Networking with professionals in the field can lead to valuable mentorship and collaboration opportunities. Embrace the interdisciplinary nature of public health and stay resilient in the face of challenges.
