Improving public health relies on the tireless efforts of the workforce.

From school nurses to food safety operatives, every single contribution helps to make our communities safer and our lives healthier. That's why RSPH works with the public health sector for Public Health Workforce Week. Each year, we highlight the work that goes on in the sector and the growing hurdles faced in the current climate.

What is the public health workforce?

The public health workforce covers a wide range of sectors and occupations, each with a different degree of involvment with the promotion of health in the population.

Wider Public Health Workforce

The wider public health workforce includes anyone who sees the protection of the health of others as a part of their role but not its core function. This could be as varied as pest controllers, health coaches, emergency services or allied health professionals.

Core Public Health Workforce

Core public health workers are professionals for whom public health is the main purpose of their job – particularly those who deliver public health interventions as part of their practice. This could include public health nurses, emergency planners, environmental health practitioners and many more roles.

Additionally, core public health workers who are also on the public health register are considered 'core-specialist'.
